We’ve all heard since we were tykes to “eat this” or “eat that” because it is good for you or because it’s “full of vitamins”. If you’re like me, your parents started you off with a daily Flintstone chewable vitamin. Then, as an adult, you graduated to taking a daily multi-vitamin.
Last year, I worked with a personal trainer renowned for his training of top pro and amateur fitness and figure competitors and bodybuilders to develop a “triathlon” diet for me that would allow me to maintain my muscularity during my triathlon training. Historically, as my training grew more intense I would lose a lot of the muscle I had gained during the offseason. I wanted to avoid that so I went to him for a diet plan.
I understood most of the meal plan developed for me except that I was taking a certain number of milligrams of Vitamin B, B12, C, and E at various meals. I didn’t understand why those vitamins were selected or why the time of the day I was to take them was important.
So being the inquisitive soul I am, I want to research vitamins and their role in my training plan, daily life and overall health. Additionally, I question the value of taking vitamins since so much of what I had read indicates, if I have a balanced diet, that taking vitamins are a waste of money; the vitamins are just excreted as waste. Over the next couple of weeks, I will be exploring vitamins and their role in my goal to live a healthy life. I’m especially eager to learn more about the new talked about Vitamin L. But I will save that for Valentine’s Day.
If you have any thoughts on vitamins and their role and importance, I would be interested in your comments.
